T.I. sentenced to a year on weapons charges

An Atlanta judge has sentenced T.I. to one year and a day behind bars on federal weapons charges.

He will have between 30 and 60 days to report to prison. He already has completed about 1,000 hours of community service and has warned youths about the pitfalls of guns, drugs, violence. He will need to complete 470 more hours. Damn.

T.I.

T.I. pleaded guilty last March after he was arrested in 2007, attempting to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers. The arrest happened blocks away from where he was to headline the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta hours later.

Here's what T.I. said about the sentence:

"It brings me great pleasure and honor to say to you today that I have begun to close this chapter in my life with, of course, the help and blessings of the U.S. attorneys and the courts of the U.S. government.

Although I am not thrilled about my next year and a day, I am pleased that I am beginning the process of putting this all behind me. Thank you and I apologize to my family, to the young men, young women that I mentor. I hope that I can keep at least one, if not a million or more, from going down a similar path. I just want to say thank you."

Damn man, an entertainer of his stature with that many, and those type of guns, musta been into some shit. Nice one Clifford. But somehow I think he'll be makin' millions whilst he's in there. Lucky muhhfucka.

8-bit Hip Hop Medley

Ever wondered what Hip Hop would have sounded like if it were used as the soundtrack to a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) video game?

Me neither, but damn this is cool! Basically what some of Jay-Z, Kanye, T.I. and some other rappers beats would have sounded like on a video game in the 80's. Classic.

Now I'm waiting on some new-school rapper to flip the script (did I really just use that term?) and start sampling some old-school video game music.

It's not like it hasn't been done before.

There's Benefit's joint Warp To World 6-9 which uses the classic Super Mario Bros. sample.

Smif-n-Wessun (then Cocoa Brovaz) also flipped the Mario sample for Super Brooklyn. Ill shit.

Sampling Mario Bros. is almost too easy though. How about Extended F@mm's Line Drop, where they borrow the famous Tetris music and use it to great effect on the concept track. In the game, the music speeds up after dropping (and clearing) a number of lines. In the track, the beat/sample speeds up after each punchline dropped by the crew. Ridiculous.

Can I get a Jigga joint over some Metroid music?

How about a little Nas on a banging Ninja Gaiden (aka Shadow Warriors) beat?

Make it happen. Please.

Oh and if anyone is after MP3's of any of the tracks I linked, get at me via comments and I'll hook you up.

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - January 17th 2009

This week was another wild and crazy week in the world of Hip Hop. 2009 has been great thus far - I just hope it continues to be great. Here are some of the happenings this past week:

Death Row Records

The auction of Death Row Records has now concluded. It was auctioned off for $18 million, $7 million lower than the previously highest bid. The Canadian based company called Wide Awake Holdings now owns the master recordings from Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and other Death Row members, as well as various memorabilia from the label.

Slim Thug

Slim Thug has now signed with Koch Records, officially ending his deal with Geffen/Star Trak.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne was on ESPN earlier this week with Skip Bayless. Suprisingly, he did very well and he had a thorough knowledge of college football. I'll admit I was impressed. Shouts to Wayne.

Barack Obama

Barack Obama, the first African American President of the USA, will be officially taking office on Jan. 20th. Over 2 million folks are going to be in DC for the inauguration and conformation of his election as the 44th President of the United States of America.

T.I.

T.I. is coming out with a new docu-series called the Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go. The show will focus on T.I. showing teenagers across the country the mistakes he has made and the lessons he learned from making those mistakes.

Next week I have some sad news about J-Dilla's estate and rumors about DJ Drama having some problems at the premiere of Notorious in the ATL.

Y'all be safe and take care.

Grain.
