DJ Grain - Last Thoughts on 2008

Right now it is already 2009 in Australia and most of the world. In the last few moments of 2008, I had to drop one last post. 2008 has been a great year for DJ Grain and Co. I started doing the "Ear to the Streets" segment on 90.3FM Knoxville, TN with my cousin Rapper BT of 2nd String.

Man early in 2008, I almost stepped away from the music because my taste in music was not the same as the masses. But I linked up with my cousin BT and the rest is history......the show is #1 in Knoxville for its time slot. You do the math.

Then I hollered at Cee of the group Cee and Bekah, and man things have started to take off - so in '09 you all better watch out. This year I also have been blessed to link up with many dope MC's from across the world which I never dreamed would happen.

The best thing that happened this year man was getting the degree and beating all the stats that say I should be dead, in prison, or on drugs. With my passion for deejaying and football burning like a volcano, 2009 is going to be the year I move closer to accomplishing my dreams.

Watch out in '09 for Tommy Gunnz - Garden State Warrior, Notion - On The Corner of Notion & 9th, Cee & Bekah - The Soul Movement Vol. 3 and many, many more releases from The Movement Fam. Y'all take care and have a safe new year.

On a final note, if somebody downs you for doing positive stuff - slap 'em.

Peace,

Grain.

Alright yo, here goes. First of all I'll start out by saying I didn't listen to anywhere NEAR as much music this year as I have in the past. Kinda stepped out of the critic game, but I think I was less than inspired by a lot of the music I did hear this year. A lot of the albums in my top ten probably wouldn't get near it another year.

Top 10 Albums of the Year
The Roots - Rising Down
Nas - Untitled
Pez - A Mind of My Own (probably my favourite album of the year, and probably my favourite Aussie Hip Hop release ever)
The Game - LAX (a guilty pleasure, everyone needs their junkfood music)
Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak
360 - What You See Is What You Get
John Legend - Evolver (not as good as I hoped, but still good enough)

The Roots - Rising Down
Lil' Wayne feat. Robin Thicke - Tie My Hands
Nas - America
The Game - LAX Files (best hook of the year)

Tunes for the ages

Tunes for the ages

Once in a while, certain songs come along that you can't help obsessing over. I don't mean obsessing in the 'crazy ex partner won't accept the fact that you're not together anymore' sense - it's the good kind where you hear a track and something in that song resonates within you. I mean, you play it, then start nodding your head and you feel it - I mean really feel it.

After the track finishes, you go about your day doing your thing, but then that track comes back on through your playlist and the whole world stops again for the next 3-4 mins while you're in that trance. It's happened to me a few times in my life...okay, maybe more than a few but it never really stopped to think about it. Is there something deeper about these songs? Is it just the beat, the melody or the culmination of it all that makes us go, for lack of a better word, crazy?

So here's a bunch of songs that has, for some reason, jumped out and grabbed me (in no particular order):

A Milli - Lil' Wayne
Whoop That Trick - Deejay (Terrence Howard from the Hustle & Flow soundtrack)
Juicy - The Notorious B.I.G.
Dead Wrong - The Notorious B.I.G.
Party Up - DMX

This is the first track that I heard from Cee & Bekah and after hearing it I was like man I need to hit these guys up. The sound was very soulful and the rappin was smooth and steady. Fast forward to the present and you have the Movement Fam, that is gearing up to do big things and show that world that when you have a young southern gentleman and an Aussie gentleman combine their minds you have something serious!!!

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - Dec 20th 2008

Well I have been doing this lil segment for The Edutainment Hip Hop Show based out of Knoxville, TN hosted my cousin Rapper BT and Drop Knowledge for almost a year. It has been great and I now want to bring the show to the internet for the good people in Cyberspace. Every week I will be posting a summary of the major events that happened during the week in hip hop. Audio will be available......well most of the time!!!

Hip Hop News for the Week of Dec 14th 2008

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has decided to stop suing folks that pirate music from the internet via Napster, Limewire, and other P2P networks. Years ago I am sure everyone remembers when the record industry starting going after people that were downloading and sharing vast amounts of music. Despite their efforts to scare people into stopping their pirating, it got worse. Now in order to curve these pirates, the RIAA has decided to team up with Internet Service Providers to cut off or slow down offenders internet connection. Smart idea....no net means no music. Finally, they got something right.

J Dilla

Slum Village is talking about reuniting to do another album. After J-Dilla's untimely death, the group seemed to dissolve with everyone going their seperate ways to concentrate on solo projects. In '09 we will see what happens....I will keep you posted on that!!!!

Top Albums of 08

Kanye West - 808 and Heartbreaks
Young Jeezy - The Recession
T.I. - Paper Trail
Ludacris - Theater to the Mind
Common - Universal Mind Control
Drake - The Comeback Season
Jean Grae - Jeanius
Lil Wayne - The Carter 3
Elzhi - The Preface

Take a listen to the show on the player below.

Until next week...

Adele in 1988?

Mick Boogie & Adele - 1988

1988 was the realest year in history. So where were you?

We all know where Mick Boogie was. Conceptualizing this remix album, that's where.

UK soulstress Adele, whose album '19' was definitely one of my favourite albums this year hands down, has been gratuitously remixed by Mick Boogie and friends, utilising Hip Hop classics from 1988 - and it works.

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton even enjoyed it.

As opposed to just a mashup, it's a full remix LP that even includes dope guest spots from cats like Nalege (of Kidz In The Hall) and Big Pooh (Little Brother). Here's the tracklisting:

1) Chasing 1988: The Intro (f/ 6th Sense)
2) Day Dreams (nVMe Remix)
3) Tired (6th Sense Remix)
4) First Love (Remot Remix f/ Naledge)
5) My Same (Garbs Infinite Remix)
6) Melt My Heart To Stone (Kickdrums Remix f/ Big Pooh)
7) Cold Shoulder (Garbs Infinite Remix)
8) Right As Rain (nVMe Remix)
9) Make You Feel My Love (Remot Remix)

Download Mick Boogie and Friends' remix LP Adele - 1988

Shouts to my man Remot for landing two remixes on here, and of course, much love to his manager Sean Deez, the homie for real. Look out for Remot's work on upcoming The Movement Fam projects.

The Movement Fam on The Understudies 'CC3'

Big ups to the homies The Understudies out in the East Bay, California.

The Understudies - CC3 front cover

Not only are they top blokes, but they have just released the third installment in their mixtape series, 'CC3'. And what makes this one super awesome is that it features our inter-crew collab, 'Never Going Away', which we recorded in Oakland, California on our recent trip there.

The Understudies - CC3 back cover

The song will also be released in the very near future on vinyl in both Australia and the USA as a double sided 12", which will be very exciting. So click on the cover to be taken to the 'Name Your Price' site where you can pay what you like for it (minimum is 50cents) - and remember, is not a mixtape full of jacked beats; this is all original, quality Hip Hop from the Bay.

Click on the back cover to be taken to The Understudies MySpace page.

Oh yeah, and while you're at it, go get your free download of the G.O.D.Cast Vol 2 podcast from the crew, which features an interview with Cee, Bekah and Notion by Citizen and Fly Cobb live in Oakland.

The Movement Fam - Trackhustle.com

For all the artists out there, I stumbled across a new networking tool that could be quite beneficial. Trackhustle.com is dope - it's a little different to the average music social networking site. This joint not only has the usual ish (pics, music, bio, etc), but it also gives you access to submitting music to A&R's, popular contests from around the web and various other networking tools that I'm yet to discover.

Check out The Movement Fam Trackhustle.com page (or click the image), this is yet another dope tool that the net provides for artists. Love it.

Heartbreak Drake

Toronto native Drake, now signed to Young Money (Lil' Wayne's label for y'all who ain't know), has gotta be one of The Movement Fam's favourite MC's, hands down.

So we all had his debut mixtape, 'Comeback Season', but all of a sudden there was like three more mixtapes available. What the fuck? You know we had to share it with y'all.
