Artist Feature: Vitaly Design

Not only is The Movement Fam committed to featuring artists and models, but anyone we come in contact with who is talented, creative and driven. Shane Foran, the man behind Toronto-based Vitaly Design, is exactly that. Shane took some time out of his busy day to chat with us about his company, his inspiration and his future plans. Cee: What up, man? Thanks for taking the time to chat to us.

Shane: My pleasure dude.

Vitaly Design

Cee: So break it down; tell us about Vitaly Design and how it came about.

Shane: Vitaly came about while I was backpacking around Asia. I kept having a dream about the Buddha sitting under the Bodhi Tree – this was a time in my life ruled by work - absolutely no balance. I knew little about Buddhism but thought it had something to do with balance. I knew South East Asia was a great place to explore it’s foundation and perhaps a way to level out.

I dropped everything I was doing and with my last pennies, flew there. I stayed for 3 months. I’ll be honest, I didn’t spend a ton of time exploring Buddhism, but I did spend time learning how to live.

Vitaly was born in the last month of my trip. I always loved fashion, but had never even considered doing something with it. I flew to Bali for my last month expecting to surf. A couple days in though, I checked out inland Bali, Ubud, and couldn’t leave. The people… the artisan lifestyle… the masonry… it was inspiring. A couple days in, I thought to myself, these people could make me anything I can draw – wouldn’t it be cool to have something with a taste of Bali and a taste of urban style? I drew up my first double ring. I had several people try to make it from there. A man named Ugenk, a great man who took pride in his work, had the skills I needed. When the first proto was done, I threw a message up on Facebook asking friends if they’d want one as a gift. The response was overwhelming and from that demand and a desire to produce more designs, Vitaly was born.

Vitaly Design

Cee: Amazing. Why jewellery design as opposed to any other form of creative expression?

Shane: It just found me… I will say though, as a kid, I produced a lot of music and that slipped away. That’s when my life became all about work. Vitaly has brought me back to the right side of my brain and I love it. I don’t imagine jewelry is all you’ll see from Vitaly.

Cee: You were born in Bali and spent some time there, which was clearly a huge inspiration on your designs. What in particular about Bali (and Indonesia in general) hit the creative nerve in you?

Shane: Technically I was born in Edmonton Alberta, but you could say I was born again there… I couldn’t say one thing in particular inspired me about Bali – the place is a epicenter for artists… there’s an energy there. I’m not a genius with words, so I’m not even going to try to do it justice.

Cee: Currently your range is two and three-finger rings, with very simple yet elegant designs. Do you plan on expanding from the rings into other jewellery or clothing?

Shane: Keep your eyes pealed for my next line, which should launch internationally in about 3 months. You’ll see some single finger rings, long chains and French cuff-links. My designs will always be androgynous - I hope to see some women rocking the cufflinks too.

Ugenk

Cee: Your work is stocked in various stores in Toronto, but also in Italy. Are you planning to expand into Europe? For some reason, Italy seems a great fit for your work.

Shane: My work was well received in Italy. Dolce (of D&G) actually took notice… as a new designer, I was pretty flattered. My plans are larger than Europe, to be honest. I’m working on an International roll-out. I really think Scandinavia in particular would receive my designs well, but I’d love to see some presence in Asia (Tokyo, Singapore and Malaysia) as well as the States, South America, etc.

Anyone reading this from NYC? Keep your eyes peeled for Vitaly in September.

Vitaly Design

Cee: Jewellery aside, what else inspires you? Specifically, do you have any artists (music, visual, etc) that really make you want to create?

Shane: This question is too big!

I could have answered this with a million names of people I worship, but I don’t think they come into play for Vitaly.

What I draw from for Vitaly… Black & White, Ying and Yang, Night and Day, Love and Hate, Time and One Life - Balance. I’ve always been interested in extremes… Vitaly is about juxtaposing extremes to find balance.

Cee: Great answer. You're planning to add a section on your site that supports local Toronto musicians. That's really dope; what is the plan behind that?

Shane: It’s simple – we’re all a team – let’s start acting like it. Being an artist is a hard gig – let’s share our networks, prop eachother up and bear-hug each other’s worlds.

The “Vitaly Family” section will be dedicated to artists in Toronto who want their art to be known and who know how powerful a good team can be. It will be musicians, painters, carvers, bloggers, designers of all kinds, etc.

Cee: If you weren't designing rings, what else would you be doing? Where else do your passions lie?

Shane: The other loves in my life are snowboarding and traveling. I work for a media company whose media exists solely at ski resorts – I absolutely love my work. In my perfect world though, I’d be designing and traveling… I’d have no ‘home’.

Ubud Sono Silver

Cee: Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring creative individuals?

Shane: Be good to people – you don’t have to be spiritual to believe in Karma… being good to others perpetuates more good. If you’re driven / love your art (job, sport, etc) and treat all those you meet with respect, I think you’re on your way to where you want to be, because people will want to see you succeed.

Oh, and don’t be a talker, be a doer.

Cee: Where can the people see and purchase your work online? Hit us with the social media links!

Shane: www.vitalydesign.com

My Facebook URL is weak… https://www.facebook.com/pages/Vitaly-Design/158986170792575?ref=ts Someone wanna help me fix that?

Twitter: @VitalyDesign

Cee: Thanks for your time, man. We wish you much success!

Shane: Thanks! – Hope I didn’t talk to much… I tend to do that.

Rest In Power Sam 'Chap One' McNulty

It's a sad day. One of the finest MCs I've had the pleasure to work with passed away suddenly last week at the age of 30. Samuel 'Chap One' McNulty was a New York kid living in Melbourne, Australia. I didn't know the dude as well as Notion did, but he was such a talented MC and such a good dude.

Rest In Peace Sam 'Chap One' McNulty

Like Chap's Facebook page; check out the unreleased joint 'Friends'; and donate to The Chapter One Memorial Fund.

Chap appeared on two joints from Notion's 'World Domi-Notion' mixtape (2008):

To The Banquet-it My Piano ft Chap One and Cee

We'll miss you, homie.

2010 Wrap Up

As with our 2009 wrap up, this is a bit late, but that's life. Show of the year These were my favourite shows in 2010, the year where I saw more shows than the last few years combined: Alexisonfire / Norma Jean / Four Year Strong (Sound Academy, Toronto) The Temper Trap (Festival Hall, Melbourne and Phoenix, Toronto) Florence & The Machine (Festival Hall, Melbourne) dead prez (The Espy, Melbourne) Mayer Hawthorne (The Corner Hotel, Melbourne / The Bowery Ballroom, New York) Asking Alexandria / Born of Osiris / All That Remains (Phoenix, Toronto) Dilated Peoples (The Espy, Melbourne) B.o.B. The Temper Trap live in Toronto

Asking Alexandria live in Toronto

Rookie of the year J. Cole Laws Freddie Gibbs

Wiz Khalifa

Overachiever of the year (artist that did way beyond what was expected) Wiz Khalifa I just can't understand this whole phenomenon. To me, his music is nothing short of average. I've tried on numerous occasions to get into the tunes but I can't. Definitely achieved way more than expected.

Underachiever of the year (artist that was expected to do a lot but didn't) Emilio Rojas His latest mixtape had a damn near superstar line up (production from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, features from B.o.B., Killa Mike, Yelawolf, etc) and was presented by Travis Barker's clothing line yet it made minimal noise. Folks will wake up in 2011.

Drake - Thank Me Later

Biggest disappointments Drake - Thank Me Later and Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday Both of these albums were almost unprecedented in their anticipation, yet both were average at best. The still spawned hits but definitely let folks down; or perhaps the hype was just too much for them.

Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday

Producers of the year Kanye West (did you HEAR his album?) Statik Selektah (he grinds damn hard and is always consistently good) Tokyo Cigar Statik Selectah Buckwild Apollo Brown

Dopest artists discovered in 2010 (whether they debuted this year or not) I was MEGA late on a lot of aritsts, but 2010 was my year of discovery. I heard more new music in 2010 than ever before, and it honestly changed my life: J. Cole (Cyclops' inclusion) Laura Marling Angus & Julia Stone The Shins Alexisonfire Miike Snow The Temper Trap Florence & The Machine Paul Dempsey / Something For Kate Stone Temple Pilots Pretty Lights Ellie Goulding Pixies Passion Pit Parkway Drive Paramore Panic! At The Disco Muse Mazzy Star The Mars Volta Katie Noonan / George Joshua Radin James Morrison Doves The Dillinger Escape Plan Bertie Blackman Beirut

The Social Network

Movies of the year Stone Buried Unstoppable Twelve You Don’t know Jack The Killer Inside Me The Social Network

Predictions for 2011 Kanye will clean up at next years Grammys Music will continue to get better, just as it did in 2010 after a shitty 2009 British music will absolutely kill shit. Already artists like Jessie J, Jamie Woon and James Blake are making some serious noise with their unique sounds, including the relatively new genre of post-dub step.

When I saw the email that David Dallas signed with Duck Down and is moving to the US, I was stoked. It proved that dudes from our side of the world can come to North America and make moves in Hip Hop. We're doing the exact same thing but on a smaller scale (for now), so this is hella inspiring. What Cee Be On... Paul Dempsey

I've ashamedly fronted on a lot of Aussie rock bands for years. One particular band being Something For Kate. Sure, I'd heard the name in the last decade or so but never paid attention. That was until we bumped into SFK's singer/songwriter Paul Dempsey in the elevator at CMJ in New York City a month or so ago. He took the time to chat to us, and we managed to catch him live twice while we were in town, and last weekend here in Toronto at the Drake. His solo album, 'Everything Is True', is fucking brilliant, to say the least. The main singles and videos from the album have the damn embed code disabled (from Paul's official page), so here are my two favourite songs from Paul anyway - 'Safety In Numbness' live in NYC, and new song 'We'll Never Work In This Town Again'. There's also a great video of Paul being interviewed in Melbourne about his songwriting process. Dude's a genius, straight up.

Emilio Rojas - To The Fullest ft Jaiden The Cure (video)

Y'all already know that Emilio is my favourite MC (alongside Phonte, of course), so I'm vibed as hell for his new project, 'Life Without Shame', presented by DJ Green Lantern again. I caught up with Emilio at A3C in Atlanta recently when he rocked some of the new joints from the tape, and it sounds fucking amazing.

Here's the video for the first single, 'To The Fullest' with vocalist Jaiden The Cure, directed by Court Dunn, who's incredible (we gotta work fam!). Not sure when the tape drops, but the pre-release party is tonight in Rochester, NY so it can't be far away...

The Movement Fam's A3C and CMJ Wrap Up

Aight, so we're a bit delayed on this one. But y'all can forgive us. We'd never been to anything like this before, and the shit is hard work. Seriously. Networking. Trying to talk to that producer/MC/DJ/industry dude without looking or sounding like a groupie or a new jack. Yelling over loud music all night. Up early and paying attention to panels all day. It's a full time job doing this shit. But we ain't complaining; both of these conferences were some of the most amazing experiences we've had thus far with music, and in 2011, we finna be rockin' shows there, beleeeeedat. We kicked off Atlanta by scoring tickets to the Drake show at the Fox Theatre. Bonus. Notion and I walked into a room full of people rapping every word to a Soulja Boy song. Oh-kay. Five minutes after we got in there, Drake started so it was perfect timing. Apparently Tyga opened, so we prolly didn't miss much. The crowd, mostly women and their generally less-than-enthusiastic partners, stood up pretty much the whole time and there was a lot of screaming. Drizzy did most of the joints I wanted to hear bar 'Say What's Real'. 'Forever' was dope; he even brought Young Jeezy and The-Dream out for their respective collaborations (I have no idea what they are), and the pyrotechnics for 'Fireworks' were awesome. Great show.

Drake @ Fox Theatre, Atlanta

So A3C (it stands for All 3 Coasts, for those who ain't know. I didn't til recently) kicked off on Thursday at the Masquerade complex in East Atlanta. The venue was dope as it had about 5 stages with either performances, demonstrations or panels on at any given time, so there was never a moment of boredom. We finally got to meet a gang of folks we'd built with over the years but never met in person (as well as a bunch of folks we respect and have admired for years), including North Carolina producer S.T.T.R.E.S.S. (below with The Fam), Kevin Nottingham, Dasha, Hassahn, Emilio Rojas, Hezekiah, Donwill and Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, Che Grand, Big Dho, Chaundon, J The S, DJ Evil Dee, DJ Z of DJ Booth.net, Crooked I, El Da Sensei, Illmaculate, Laws, The Bodega Brovas, Khrysis and a gang more.

Cee, Notion, VP, S.T.T.R.E.S.S. and Bekah

The Fam reppin'

Day 1 was the 9th Wonder interview by Dres The Beatnik, and included guests and collaborators Buckshot and Murs. It was an awesome insight into 9th's work ethic, inspirations and methods. The rest of the night included performances from Jamla artists like Skyzoo, The Away Team, Rapsody, Big Reemo, Murs and Jean Grae. And of course, DJ Evil Dee was on the mix (c'mon kick it!).

Day 2 was full of more shows and informative panels. The two main showcases we caught were Kevin Nottingham's and DJ Booth's. Kev's included dope sets from HiPNOTT Records artists like Jermside, Nobody Famous and the Hall of Justus cats headlined and tore it down (Rapper Big Pooh, Chaundon, Jozeemo and Joe Scudda). DJ Booth's showcase had sets from cats like J The S, Emilio Rojas, Cyhi The Prince, Laws, Exile and Crooked I. We ventured inside to catch Illmaculate's set, followed by Seattle native J. Pinder, both of whom murked it.

Nosh even caught Mr Douthit to get a quick photo and pass on a copy of his tribute mixtape to the man himself. And we also managed to chill with Crooked I for a while and explain our move to Canada from Australia to pursue our music, which he said he really respected and that we'll be successful with that sort of determination, belief and passion. That really meant a lot coming from him. Great dude.

Day 3 was just as hectic. More panels in the early afternoon and the weather was gorgeous. Atlanta turned it on for us, we were drinking beers in the sun; it felt like home. More networking and more shows, including Torae, Sha Stimuli, Lessondary Crew (Jermiside, Von Pea, Donwill and Che Grand), Reks and Statik Selektah, the big homies The Bodega Brovas (Traviii 7th, Keynote and Headkrack), Hezekiah and horn section 'Me So Horny' (who KILLED it), The Artifacts, Emilio Rojas, Camp Lo and Rhymefest. All up, it was an amazing festival and we'll be there next year for sure.

Cee & Hezekiah @ A3C

After a quick couple days in Toronto to do some laundry and re-pack, we were on the bus to New York City to catch CMJ (College Music Journal). Yet another amazing experience; though a little different than A3C in the sense that it was general music business across all genres rather than strictly Hip Hop. We chilled for a couple days to check out the city as it was VP's first time, but Notion and I caught the David Icke lecture on the Sunday before booking it to the Mayer Hawthorne show downtown at the Bowery Ballroom, missing half his set. We got to hang with the homie Cyclops too, which was dope.

The Movement Fam & Cyclops in NYC

Mayer Hawthorne @ Bowery Ballroom

CMJ started on the Tuesday, and it was full on. The panels went from 11am to 4.45pm every day, with only 15 minutes break between each one, where we had to fit in any quick chats to panelists and toilet breaks before heading to the next panel and trying to get there early to ensure a seat. It was like being back at Uni. But the information we gathered was absolutely incredible, and the people we met will definitely be either long term friends or business associates.

The first night we caught the New Zealand showcase at Le Poisson Rouge, where we saw awesome bands like Street Chant, Ruby Frost and Kids of 88, saw Blonde Summer over at Kenny's Castaway (where Bruce Springsteen apparently did his first ever gig), and then back to LPR for the Duck Down vs Blacksmith Showcase. It was Duck Down's 15 Year Anniversary so they went all out. The 16 year old in me lost my fucking shit when every Duck Down artist (with the exception of Louieville Sluggah pretty much) rocked the stage, performing classics like 'Le Fleh, Le Flah, Eshkoshka', 'Operation Lockdown', 'I Gotcha Opin' and more. Incredible. The newly signed Black Rob even came through to perform 'Whoa'. No words.

The Blacksmith kids killed it too. Jean Grae and Mela Machinko, Pharoahe Monch and Strong Arm Steady did an awesome job. We bailed after SAS so I'm not sure who else rocked, but it was an incredible night.

Black Rob @ Duck Down Showcase, CMJ

Sean P @ Duck Down Showcase, CMJ

Starang Wondah, Rock and Buckshot @ Duck Down Showcase, CMJ

Mela Machinko, 9th Wonder & Jean Grae @ Duck Down Showcase, CMJ

Pharoahe Monch @ Duck Down Showcase, CMJ

The rest of the week consisted of panels until Friday and shows every night. The soul showcase with Eric Roberson was amazing, the international showcase at 92Y Tribeca was really interesting, we even caught Aussies Paul Dempsey (from Something For Kate) and Angus & Julia Stone doing their thing. Israeli electro artist Onili was awesome, as was closing night with Foreign Exchange (who had Darien Brockington and Zo rocking with them all night, and they even brought out Rapper Big Pooh and Jesse Boykins III). Shouts to the big homie outta Jersey, Mike Philson, who we connected with. So after two weeks of shows every night and early mornings at panels, we're absolutely shambles. Now it's time to re-up, consolidate the networks and use the new info we learned. Until next year...

Tokyo Cigar Thoughts: BELLY

BELLY

Hood classic. That movie that represented the hood so thoroughly it is revered by ghetto dwellers world wide for showing outsiders ( which I myself was until I moved to Springhill Lake and started seeing firsthand what the hood was about ) the daily operation like Guru and Primo. Hood classics tend to only vary in terms of location. Weather it’s Uptown New York’s gritty sidewalks underscoring “Juice” or the Brazilian trenches that framed the blood soaked saga of “City Of God” the background adds it own element to the story but regardless of slang or fashion senses the drama had it’s own undertones that were indiscriminate of area. To quote  Rakim “It aint where your from it’s where your at” Weather your particularly “at” is Far Rockaway Queens or Kingston Jamaica one thing remains. Slugs burn, drugs are married to problems and shit is REAL.

This movie centered around the character Tommy from Queens New York ( played by the kid DMX ) and gave a glimpse into his day to day life. Nas also starred in the movie as Sincere, Tommy’s right hand man, but DMX was the undisputed star of the flick. He came off as the cat he rhymed about on record but with more money. Shit, dude had the JUMPOFF crib for sure. Stacks in stacks but still that grimy project cat that would yoke anybody up over a wayward glance.  The ultimate charismatic villain. The plot revolves around an outta town trip to sling dope fronted to them by the Jamaican Kinpin Lennox ( THIS DUDE IS CRAZY!!!! ) They get snitched on by envious local dealers and a police raid stops the music like a drunk cat bumping the DJ’s turntable at a packed house party.  The movie is overall a commentary on the glamorization of crime in Black communities. DMX represented the devil in the equation. Overly ambitious and ruthless to perfection. Nas represented the tortured soul. Drawn to the lifestyle he and Tommy have but realizing the fact success in that life still represents a universal loss. Things kind of loosen up structure wise towards the end  but the message is still subliminally sprinkled throughout the movie. Like the part where Tommy has an argument with Knowledge ( Played by Power from Wu tang’s camp. Speaking of Wu, Method Man plays a ghetto assassin in the flick too. SUUUUUUUUU ) one of the characters asks “What happened to Knowledge?” and Tommy responds “Fuck Knowledge. Roll up. I wanna get high” Very slick move Hype. I like that.

Hype Williams has a right to be considered the best music video director of all time. Seriously. Dude is a monster with his.  He created marvelous epics for most of the certified superstars in Hip hop and RnB. Stuff like “Put your hands where my eyes can see”, “The rain” and “Can it be all so simple” redefined videos forever. The cinematography was beyond belief and his videos played like mini movies. Hollywood was the next logical step for him. His work on this movie is fucking amazing. The club scene with the black light, the parts in Jamaica, hell, every frame of this movie is beautifully shot. It's one of those types of films that was hard to look away from even for a second because you didn't want to miss that next fly image that was guaranteed to pop up. Even the image of the snitch ( Played by dude that played Cain in Menace 2 Society ) popping up for the first time rocking a VERY yellow track suit, hair permed, eating a banana just stuck out because of how it looked. ( me, Stix and Troub used to say his line from that scene "I don't like that. I don't like that at all" at random times for weeks after we saw it, straight laughing our ass off every time ) I’m not a film student I’m just a cat that knows what I like and believe me I like the way this movie was directed. This flick is the embodiment of the term visually stunning. Hype combined all his tricks for this and stepped it up even further. It’s like when Dre made the Chronic. It had elements of his style from NWA but he redefined and perfected it on that album.

Hood classics may not win Oscars but the effect that they have are just as strong for those that relate to them. My boy called me up today and told me a crazy thing that happened to him and he said that he felt like DMX in Belly. Which caused both of us to laugh because the flick still gets brought up in casual conversations on the regular. And that, boys and girls, is a TRUE HOOD CLASSIC.

Peace

Eternia back in TO

Eternia Returns to Toronto from themanifesto.ca on Vimeo.

Extremely glad we here for this right now. WHAT UP, E? Peep the info after the jump...

"You know that face you got, when a real gritty, rugged track came on and you just mean-mugged to the rhythm of the track? Like, you were feeling it, but you were feeling the rapper’s disgust for whatever it may be. Well, Eternia, one of hip hop’s elite female lyricists, can and will make any listener do that. Why? Because she’s mean on the mic, fierce with her poetry, and relentless with her assault.

Always representing Toronto to the fullest extent, E has enjoyed quite the successful year as herself and MoSS (producer) finally released their much anticipated album At Last on the legendary Fat Beats Records. The album has a variety of features ranging from Rah Digga, Rage (Lady of Rage), Jessica Kaya, Tona, Maestro, Joell Ortiz,Termanology, Reef The Lost Cauze, as well as Tiye Pheonix, Jean Grae and Ras Kass on remixes.

Not jaded by the critical acclaim and fan satisfaction, E stays real with it, “I do one thing, and one thing only, and that is emcee. That’s it.” And that she does well. Always on the cusp of being undoubtedly one of Toronto’s finest, Eternia has definitely garnered plenty of attention in her other hometown, New York. A scene where the underground is big, if not bigger, than the mainstream facet, Eternia knows the importance of showing T Dot talent to the world. “People weren’t watching Toronto until recently,” E says with Manifesto TV, “Our artists are different.” While Manifesto attempts to bridge the two hip hop communities of New York and Toronto together, Eternia is living proof that it is accomplishable. Catch her at the Manifesto Main Event, September 26th, 2010 at Dundas Square in Downtown Toronto."

This is hella cool. Takes me back to seeing 'Fade To Black' when it dropped back in 2004 in Times Square. Check the dealio:

Sean Price's Baby Shower (video)

So I caught the email from Duck Down about this one...Sean P was holding the world's first Hip Hop Baby Shower in New York to celebrate the birth of his first daughter, Shaun Price (who is still in the womb).

On the real, this is one the funniest and cleverest ideas for a live show I've heard in a minute, and ONLY Sean P could pull that off (pause). Peep the video from the night, looked classic.
