Fokis - Show Me The Money feat Mr. eXquire & E-Cashe$ (prod by G.C.)

Fokis

This one is a bit of a straight up rip from Big Kev's blog, but his producer G.C. (who's dope as hell) has laced a beat for Fokis, who banged out a fresh joint called 'Show Me The Money'. Here's what Kev has to say about it:

"Back in the limelight again with the premier single from his up and coming project is the hardest working L.E.S lyricist, Fokis. Calling on acquaintances from his Walk Through MySpace project which was available for free download last year and which featured some of the brightest up and coming stars from across the US, Fokis teamed with Mr. eXquire and E-Cashe$ on his new joint “Show Me The Money”. I’m also happy to say that this is the first beat recorded to from G.C’s Freshness Sampler which we put out a few months ago.

Produced by Maryland native but the Utah residing emerging beatsmith G.C, “Show Me The Money” is about making the most of what you have during this economic battle we all find ourselves fighting. “During these hard times its important to find something to take your mind off of all the stress and try and find some joy,” explained Fokis. “So I reached out to Mr. eXquire & E-Cashe$ who are two very talented and hungry up and coming emcees and well the result was this, a joint to have a bit of fun with basically.”

“Show Me The Money” will be featured on the up and coming project from Fokis, MY NAME IS FOKIS a collection of work old and new which will be available in the coming months."

Top 50 Worst Hip Hop Album Covers Of All Time

Big ups to the homie K-Real for linking me on this one.

It's a tad old, from like April last year, but this is classic.

A blog by the name of Honolulu Hip Hop put together this dope list of the Top 50 Worst Hip Hop Album Covers Of All Time. Absolutely hilarious - sometimes you tend to overlook the wackest album covers, but this brings all that to light.

Here's a classic quote from the piece:

"Master P has wrought more terrible album artwork for hip hop culture upon us than anyone else. Master P sets the bar so low that one could only aspire to create such art by smoking rock while using Paint Shop on a salvaged Packard Bell."

The Ghostface cover, below, won the Gayness Award for these reasons:

"At first glance, this album doesn’t seem to fit in with the horror that is the Top 50 Worst Hip Hop Album Covers of all time. But then you look further, and you notice Ghost is wearing a robe which is coming undone while he serves Raekwon breakfast. Is that a pancake? And please…really LOOK at Raekwon’s face (and what I believe may be a wad of cash in his hands). Big ups to our homie KnowXOne for hooking us up with this one. Bulletproof Wallets receives our Gayness Award."

Model Mondays Feature: Arkeedah McCormick

This week it is my pleasure to present Ms. Arkeedah, reppin the ATL to the fullest. She represents a different type of model that a lot of folks may not be so familiar with. Besides doing runway shows and promotional events, she is a 'hair model'. These fearless young ladies that are hair models are a unique group, they have to trust that the individual doing their hair will do a good job and not have them looking jacked up in front of audience. Ms. Arkeedah took some time out of her busy schedule to chat with me about the modeling industry and drop some knowledge for young ladies thinking of being models. Check out the interview below.

DJ Grain: Where are you from?
Arkeedah: Atlanta, GA.

DJ Grain: How many years have you been modeling?
Arkeedah: 3 years.

DJ Grain: What are the misconceptions people commonly have about models that are untrue?
Arkeedah: The most common one I deal with is people automatically assume I have an attitude, but when people get to know me, they find out I’m a pretty cool person.

DJ Grain: What shows, videos, magazines, etc. have you been featured in?
Arkeedah: Maxim, Online Bonus Babe 2007, MTV’s Yo Momma Extra 03-2007, Aanaya Couture Fashion Show July 19 2007, Bronner Brother’s FHI Heat Hair Show Technical Model 8-20-2007, Milky Way Hair Battle Model 8-04-2008, Mychael Knight Model for Fall Line Presentation 2008,Karl Kani New Face Top 20 Finalist, and Hotlanta Hair Directory Volume 5.

DJ Grain: What photographers have you worked with?
Arkeedah: Reggie Anderson, Sta'fon Shamayim, and Precise.

DJ Grain: What photographers would you like to work with?
Arkeedah: I would love to work with Derek Blanks and Leo Marshall.

DJ Grain: Can you describe the grind of a model trying to break into the industry?
Arkeedah: One word, HUSTLE. Webster definition: promote energetically and aggressive. You have to know where you want to go, and have a plan on how to get there.

DJ Grain: Any words for the ladies out there that have aspirations of entering the modeling industry?
Arkeedah: Stay motivated and if you have the drive to pursue it, then do it!

DJ Grain: How can people contact you for booking?
Arkeedah: I can be reached via email @ Arkeedah McCormick

Blogging about blogging...

I Love Blogging

So I was on Twitter today, and noticed @definitely_nah tweeted about 'blogging about blogging = zzzzz'. And that got me thinking.

Is 'blogging about blogging' becoming a bit of a phenomena? I'm not that into blogging, but it appears to me that you can equate this to 'rapping about rap', which is all too common in Hip Hop. Now I don't really have a problem with 'rapping about rap', as it is essentially what the culture was created upon. The MC's initial role was to big up the DJ and talk about how 'dope' and 'fresh' he is, and that merged into talking about how well the MC in question rocks said party. And rocks it right. Right?

Shakespeare blogging

So really, what is blogging? Is it just another forum for the masses to speak their often useless minds? It seems that pre-internet, there just wasn't as many ways for the average person to have their say. Artists and musicians and creative types generally got their views across via their various mediums, yet the mechanic down the road with a passion for left wing liberalism only chatted about it down the pub after work.

Deathbed blogging

Now, with the advent of the good old interweb, social media/networking and blogging, it's all too easy for people - I mean, everyone - to have their say. Is this a good thing, though? Well, it's definitely better than the media being filled up with the views of a handful of select people, which of course, it still is. With the internet, though, you're not stuck tuning in to the same old programs and viewpoints, which are often tainted (who am I kidding? They're ALWAYS tainted).

Blogging out loud

That said, I think there needs to be more of a balance. There's more blogs than you can poke a magic wand at, these days. AND there's more rappers than you can poke a mic at. It seems that as technology advanced, it's been easier for everyone to have their say, whether the medium be blogs or music. So as much as this can be a great thing - there have been too many intelligent minds left in the cold due to the lack of mediums to get their points across - it can also be damning as now everyone thinks they're a writer or an MC, due to the ease of access. And does this mean that bloggers should blog about how good they blog? Is there 'battle blogging'? Actually, there is. Check the homie Weapon X's blog, My Blog Could Bash Your Blog.

Monkeys blogging

I could possibly fit into both categories, so I'm far from judging here, although I've been rapping since I was barely a teenager, LONG before I had internet access. Or before it was even around, now I think of it. The folks my age know what I'm talking about - we had to struggle to get access to anything Hip Hop, and meeting other rappers was more difficult than logging on to MySpace. We did it the hard way and now we appreciate what this technology brings us (haha I sound like my grandfather). So I guess I don't fit into the new age MC category here, but I am fairly new to blogging in the overall scheme of things, but I think here at The Movement Fam.com, we bring a whole bunch of cool shit, as opposed to our stupid, meaningless and self-indulgent views. Which this actually is. Whatever. Blog on, blogger.

Bekah on Neighbours?

Bekah on Neighbours, Thursday March 13th 2009 from The Movement Fam on Vimeo.

That's right, the lady of The Movement Fam is getting her drama queen on. On Thursday 5th March, Bekah appeared as a featured extra on Neighbours (an Australia TV soap opera, based in Melbourne). She plays a nurse, and this was her second appearance on the show. Check the video, there's no audio as I couldn't get it working for some reason.

For those who wanna know, it's Ep 5639 [S 25 - Ep 034].

Emilio Rojas - Recession Proof

This cat has gotta be one of my favourite MC's right now. Emilio Rojas aka Raks One, Rochester, New York representative, is part of the homie J. Master's Same Plate Management stable, and is most definitely one of the hottest up and coming MC's. His guest verses smash every time without fail, his Phaze One project with M-Phazes is highly anticipated and from the sneak peek we heard, it's off the chain, and to tide us all over, Emilio linked with Legend and DJ Noodles to bring us Recession Proof.

Here's the official blurb:

"Emilio Rojas drops his highly anticipated new mixtape “Recession Proof”, presented by DJ Noodles and Legend. After dropping a slew of singles, popping up on radio shows, a steady stream of live performances, and MTV video play, Emilio follows up with his first official mixtape, featuring appearances by Stat Quo, Fashawn, Donny Goines and more, while Illmind, M-Phazes, Khrysis and others check in on the production tip."

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - Feb 28th 2009

What it do, folks? I'm back again with another weekly wrap up.

Twista has just signed with EMI/Capitol after a brief stint with Koch Records. He is also hard at work on a new album entitled "Category F5" which is set to be released this June.

Twista

Russell Simmons has been ordered to pay US$480,000 a year to ex-wife Kimora Lee. That is messed up - she is pregnant again by another man!

Russell Simmons and Kimora Lee

Universal wants to shelf Lil' Wayne's rock n roll album "Rebirth". The execs at the label are cautious of the album after the first single Prom Queen only reached #15 on the U.S. Billboards Hot 100 chart.

DJ Khaled is now the president of Def Jam South, taking over for Scarface.

Cam'Ron has spoken to Jim Jones. For those of y'all that don't know, Cam has been M.I.A. for some years. Freaky Zeekey setup the situation because he felt that two friends should not dissolve a friendship over petty stuff.

Until next week...

NOTORIOUS

I'm quite impatiently waiting for Notorious to finally drop locally. Seven more days. Apparently it's due for release in Australia next Thursday, 12 March.

To help you compare, it dropped on 16 January 2009 in the USA. That's two months. Granted, the release delay is a lot shorter than for a lot of movies in the past, but it's still not good enough. You'd think the movie studios would wanna hit everywhere in the world at once. Especially with all the piracy around these days and the ease at which people can find and download a high quality copy of most movies.

Why does it take big films like Watchmen, which released around the world today, for there to be a simultaneous worldwide release? From Belgium's opening on the 4th of March through to Japan's opening of 28 March. Less than a month is a beautiful timeframe. Less than a month is something I can handle.

What makes it worse is that Fox Home Entertainment have just released pics of the DVD and Blu-Ray covers for Notorious. Like I need to be drooling any more than I already am.

Something tells me I will one day own that "Collector's Edition" Blu-Ray. Not that I think the movie is gonna be outstanding, but it'll probably end up being one of those Hip Hop movies you bust out every now and then.

Anybody out there seen Notorious yet? Drop a comment and let us know what you thought.

224 Word Palindrome

Demetri Martin

Alright, this is a little left of centre for The Movement Fam.com. So me and Gunny were talking about palindromes the other week - as you do. And I was reading a local street press when I saw someone mention a 224 word palindrome by a bloke called Demetri Martin, who apparently I should know about. He's an NY based comedian, but to come up with this little gem is pure genius:

"Dammit I’m Mad"

by

Demetri Martin

Dammit I’m mad.
Evil is a deed as I live.
God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.
To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.
Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?
Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.
I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.
Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,
In my halo of a mired rum tin.
I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.
Is evil in a clam? In a trap?
No. It is open. On it I was stuck.
Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.
Be still if I fill its ebb.
Ew, a spider… eh?
We sleep. Oh no!
Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.
Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.
Both, one… my names are in it.
Murder? I’m a fool.
A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash,
A Goddam level I lived at.
On mail let it in. I’m it.
Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet!
A loss it is alas (sip). I’d assign it a name.
Name not one bottle minus an ode by me:
“Sir, I deliver. I’m a dog”
Evil is a deed as I live.
Dammit I’m mad.

DJ Club Sets & Concerts Streaming LIVE

www.awdio.com

Now that I got that over with, let me explain it.

The site broadcasts concerts and DJ performances LIVE from around the world.

Covers all styles of music but rest assured Hip Hop is well represented. You can list events by musical genre as well as venue list (bar, club, concert venue, etc.).

I just found out about this place but signed up as soon as I saw that they will be streaming a live Pete Rock set from Stockholm, Sweden tomorrow. Are you serious? Cancelling my plans as we speak.

Took me one minute to register. Currently streaming some "eclectic" music from a record store in Canada to test it out. Amazing.

In 5 hours I'll get my first taste of Hip Hop live from Bed Supperclub in Bangkok, Thailand.

Get to it. Audio quality is surprisingly great and I haven't had a single hiccup in the 10-15 minutes I've been listening.

Kevin Nottingham Presents The Movement Fam Remix Album

Kevin Nottingham Presents The Movement Fam Remix Album

It's finally here!!!!!

After maybe 6 months in the making, Kevin Nottingham Presents The Movement Fam Remix Album is in the building.

For those who aren't familiar with this, producers from around the world were able to download 12 acapellas from Notion's World Domi-NoTiOn and Cee & Bekah's The Soul Movement Volume 2 mixtapes, and submit remixes for this project. We had well over 100 remixes submitted, which blew our mind.

We ended up including remixes from producers from all over the planet, including Hungary, Belgium, USA, Denmark and Australia. We worldwide, baby! And if any producers out there wanna remix our songs for the hell of it (a couple cats have hit me up already about it), you can still download the acapellas from the original Kevin Nottingham Movement Fam Remix contest page.

Big ups to ALL the producers who submitted remixes, there a lot of fire and it made our job pretty hard! I can't thank Kev enough, though. Dude held us down when it got difficult for a bit there, never gave up, and we got this one over the line. Plus it's a hot ass album!

My apologies to Isbjerg for misspelling your name, homie!! Shit, my bad! And HUGE props to Notion for lacing the artwork! Boom!
