DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - January 24th 2009

In the world of Hip Hop, this had been another wild week. To top it all off, Phonte (of Little Brother) let loose on Kanye West, letting his feelings about Yeezy's latest album and the autotune madness. Barack Obama has now officially been confirmed as the President of the United States.

Joe Budden

Saigon

Just Blaze had to mediate to severe beef between Joe Budden and Saigon before things got physical or violent.

Phonte

Kanye West

Phonte has called Kanye West a coward for his latest album. All that autotune ish did not impress Phonte, who said that '808s & Heartbreak' was garbage and if he really had talent he would have used his real voice.

Diddy

Former Bad Boy rapper Mark Curry has broken his silence of Puff's crazy business tactics. In some cases, Diddy would charge his own artists to appear on their songs and in their videos. The worst thing was that Diddy would insist his artists have his Bentley in all their videos, then charge them and write off his car as a tax credit for business purposes.

J.Dilla

J-Dilla's family unfortunately is not getting anything from the sale of his beats. His money is tied up in medical bills and IRS debt that his estate still owes. In this case, it is very bad because his mom, who now has lupus, is not getting anything and also his daughters are not getting a dime from his estate.

'Til next week y'all, take care and stay tuned for more news.

Peace,

Grain

Happy Australia Day

Happy Australia Day

Australia

To all the Australians out there, both soaking it up on our own shores and those ex-pats enjoying a VB and vegemite sanga overseas - Happy Australia Day!

Here's what Wikipedia says about it:

"Australia Day, also known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day, is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, the unfurling of the British flag at Sydney Cove and the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia."

So basically, today we celebrate both the official creation of our great country, and also the fact that a bunch of white folks claimed 'Terra nullius' on a land occupied by what is possibly the oldest surviving culture on earth, stole their land, committed genocide on their people, treated them as less than human (an attitude which remains today) and even stole their kids mid-last century. Go Australia!

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - January 17th 2009

This week was another wild and crazy week in the world of Hip Hop. 2009 has been great thus far - I just hope it continues to be great. Here are some of the happenings this past week:

Death Row Records

The auction of Death Row Records has now concluded. It was auctioned off for $18 million, $7 million lower than the previously highest bid. The Canadian based company called Wide Awake Holdings now owns the master recordings from Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and other Death Row members, as well as various memorabilia from the label.

Slim Thug

Slim Thug has now signed with Koch Records, officially ending his deal with Geffen/Star Trak.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne was on ESPN earlier this week with Skip Bayless. Suprisingly, he did very well and he had a thorough knowledge of college football. I'll admit I was impressed. Shouts to Wayne.

Barack Obama

Barack Obama, the first African American President of the USA, will be officially taking office on Jan. 20th. Over 2 million folks are going to be in DC for the inauguration and conformation of his election as the 44th President of the United States of America.

T.I.

T.I. is coming out with a new docu-series called the Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go. The show will focus on T.I. showing teenagers across the country the mistakes he has made and the lessons he learned from making those mistakes.

Next week I have some sad news about J-Dilla's estate and rumors about DJ Drama having some problems at the premiere of Notorious in the ATL.

Y'all be safe and take care.

Grain.

Tunage on YouTube for You...

Movement Fam YouTube Channel

Apologies for the retarded photo. Photoshop is out of action currently, couldn't whip up a Movement Fam YouTube themed goodie.

Anyway, after a week or so of grinding to work out iMovie's intricacies, I finally managed to upload every song from all four Movement Fam mixtape releases onto The Movement Fam YouTube channel.

So for those who always wanted to just hear the tunes and couldn't be fucked downloading the mixtapes (though you really should, it'll change your life), or you're trying to show one of your homies the dope music coming out of The Fam, then we've just made life a lot easier. For you. Coz we love you all.

The Movement Fam @ Blue Tile Lounge - Sat 10th Jan 2009

So on Saturday just gone, The Movement Fam finally had our first official gig as a crew, and the first gig of 2009. Boom. Although it was billed as a Cee & Bekah gig, the whole crew was in effect for the whole show, which was dope for the stage dynamics.

Big shouts to Cam at Blue Tile Lounge for reaching out and putting us on. We took the early time slot as we haven't rocked a gig since The Evelyn gig back in May 2008 (peep The Movement Fam YouTube page for the video).

Cee & Bekah @ Blue Tile Lounge

The gig went real well though. Shouts to everyone who rolled through, we had a decent little crowd for the 9pm slot. The whole thing was filmed so we'll work out a way to get the highlights on YouTube shortly. Stay tuned for more shows in 2009...

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - January 10th 2009

Man I am truly glad to be back on it again....it's a new year and time to improve from the year before.

Wrap up of this weeks news:

Lil Wayne

Lil' Wayne is in the process of making an album that is going to be completely rock. He is doing this project to throw folks off like Kanye did with the '808's and Heartbreak' album.

Jermaine & Janet

Rumors have been flying that Jermaine Dupri has been relived of his duties as President of Island Records Urban Music, a division of Def Jam. All of the projects he was in charge of flopped, including Janet Jackson's latest album.

Katt Williams

Comedian Katt Williams just signed a deal with Warner Brother to distribute the audio from the super funny DVD 'It's Pimpin' Pimpin''.

Travis of the Gym Class Heroes just got signed by T-Pain's label Nappy Boy.

Albums looking forward to in 2009:
Tanya Morgan - Brooklynati
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot
Mickey Factz
Outkast

Peace,
DJ Grain.

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - Dec 27th 2008

2009

What up, folks?

Here is my last 'Ear To The Streets' report for 2008 on The Edutainment Hip Hop show.

2008 was a great year and there were many ups and downs. I was able to link up with folks around the world through this music stuff. In 2009, expect many projects from The Movement Fam and several mixtapes from DJ Grain. The artists to look out for in 2009 are Drake, Mickey Factz, Che Grand, Tanya Morgan, and many, many others. This should be an interesting year. I hope everyone had a great new year and are geared up for an even greater 2009.

Peace,

DJ Grain.

PS. I jacked the dope image from Aggregate Dope's blog. Check him out. Oh and I'm taking a break for the first show back on January 3rd, but I'll be in effect the following week, folks.

Check out the audio from my report on Dec 27th 2008:

Also, Cee dropped in for a quick chat with BT, so check the audio for that too:

DJ Grain - Last Thoughts on 2008

Right now it is already 2009 in Australia and most of the world. In the last few moments of 2008, I had to drop one last post. 2008 has been a great year for DJ Grain and Co. I started doing the "Ear to the Streets" segment on 90.3FM Knoxville, TN with my cousin Rapper BT of 2nd String.

Man early in 2008, I almost stepped away from the music because my taste in music was not the same as the masses. But I linked up with my cousin BT and the rest is history......the show is #1 in Knoxville for its time slot. You do the math.

Then I hollered at Cee of the group Cee and Bekah, and man things have started to take off - so in '09 you all better watch out. This year I also have been blessed to link up with many dope MC's from across the world which I never dreamed would happen.

The best thing that happened this year man was getting the degree and beating all the stats that say I should be dead, in prison, or on drugs. With my passion for deejaying and football burning like a volcano, 2009 is going to be the year I move closer to accomplishing my dreams.

Watch out in '09 for Tommy Gunnz - Garden State Warrior, Notion - On The Corner of Notion & 9th, Cee & Bekah - The Soul Movement Vol. 3 and many, many more releases from The Movement Fam. Y'all take care and have a safe new year.

On a final note, if somebody downs you for doing positive stuff - slap 'em.

Peace,

Grain.

Alright yo, here goes. First of all I'll start out by saying I didn't listen to anywhere NEAR as much music this year as I have in the past. Kinda stepped out of the critic game, but I think I was less than inspired by a lot of the music I did hear this year. A lot of the albums in my top ten probably wouldn't get near it another year.

Top 10 Albums of the Year
The Roots - Rising Down

This is the first track that I heard from Cee & Bekah and after hearing it I was like man I need to hit these guys up. The sound was very soulful and the rappin was smooth and steady. Fast forward to the present and you have the Movement Fam, that is gearing up to do big things and show that world that when you have a young southern gentleman and an Aussie gentleman combine their minds you have something serious!!!

DJ Grain Ear to the Streets Weekly Hip Hop News Wrap Up - Dec 20th 2008

Well I have been doing this lil segment for The Edutainment Hip Hop Show based out of Knoxville, TN hosted my cousin Rapper BT and Drop Knowledge for almost a year. It has been great and I now want to bring the show to the internet for the good people in Cyberspace. Every week I will be posting a summary of the major events that happened during the week in hip hop. Audio will be available......well most of the time!!!

Hip Hop News for the Week of Dec 14th 2008

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has decided to stop suing folks that pirate music from the internet via Napster, Limewire, and other P2P networks. Years ago I am sure everyone remembers when the record industry starting going after people that were downloading and sharing vast amounts of music. Despite their efforts to scare people into stopping their pirating, it got worse. Now in order to curve these pirates, the RIAA has decided to team up with Internet Service Providers to cut off or slow down offenders internet connection. Smart idea....no net means no music. Finally, they got something right.

J Dilla

Slum Village is talking about reuniting to do another album. After J-Dilla's untimely death, the group seemed to dissolve with everyone going their seperate ways to concentrate on solo projects. In '09 we will see what happens....I will keep you posted on that!!!!

Top Albums of 08

Kanye West - 808 and Heartbreaks
Young Jeezy - The Recession
T.I. - Paper Trail
Ludacris - Theater to the Mind
Common - Universal Mind Control
Drake - The Comeback Season
Jean Grae - Jeanius
Lil Wayne - The Carter 3
Elzhi - The Preface

Take a listen to the show on the player below.

Until next week...

That's right peoples, y'all can officially purchase The Fam tunes on the interweb. It doesn't get any better than that.

The Soul Movement Volume 1 and The Soul Movement Volume 2 Originals, with full length original songs produced by folks like Styalz Fuego, Whisper, Revelino, KrisblaiR (Canada), Da-Phai, Infinite Archetype and Beat Chemist (Canada), and featuring guest spots from The Movement Fam (Notion and Tommy Gunnz), and Canada's KrisblaiR and Jessica Kaya (sister of ultra dope MC Eternia).

The Movement Fam on The Understudies 'CC3'

Big ups to the homies The Understudies out in the East Bay, California.

The Understudies - CC3 front cover

Not only are they top blokes, but they have just released the third installment in their mixtape series, 'CC3'. And what makes this one super awesome is that it features our inter-crew collab, 'Never Going Away', which we recorded in Oakland, California on our recent trip there.

The Understudies - CC3 back cover

The song will also be released in the very near future on vinyl in both Australia and the USA as a double sided 12", which will be very exciting. So click on the cover to be taken to the 'Name Your Price' site where you can pay what you like for it (minimum is 50cents) - and remember, is not a mixtape full of jacked beats; this is all original, quality Hip Hop from the Bay.

Click on the back cover to be taken to The Understudies MySpace page.

Oh yeah, and while you're at it, go get your free download of the G.O.D.Cast Vol 2 podcast from the crew, which features an interview with Cee, Bekah and Notion by Citizen and Fly Cobb live in Oakland.

Attention artists - new networking tool! Trackhustle.com

The Movement Fam - Trackhustle.com

For all the artists out there, I stumbled across a new networking tool that could be quite beneficial. Trackhustle.com is dope - it's a little different to the average music social networking site. This joint not only has the usual ish (pics, music, bio, etc), but it also gives you access to submitting music to A&R's, popular contests from around the web and various other networking tools that I'm yet to discover.

Check out The Movement Fam Trackhustle.com page (or click the image), this is yet another dope tool that the net provides for artists. Love it.

Tweet, anyone?

Aight, I'd heard of Twitter for the longest time, but never really bothered with it 'til I discovered the Barack Obama tweet. So I signed up and didn't mess with it for weeks...until yesterday.

For those who ain't know, Twitter is like the Facebook status updates...without everything else. And as shit as that sounds, it's actually really dope. And fun. And addictive. And everyone's doing it. Which, of course, is reason enough to join up.

So my man put me onto this thing called Twitterrific, which is like an MSN type program that sits on your desktop and allows you to see all the conversations between folks that you're 'following' and post directly to everyone without using the web app. Shouts to Ash for the link!
